Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Africa Water Journalist Network

Africa Water Journalist Network is an initiative to promote dialogue and coverage of water issues among African journalists. The network consists of a community of more than 1000 journalists concerned with water. It aims to improve and increase water reporting in the media.
Communication Strategies
The Africa Water Journalists Network is a community of more than 1,000 journalists concerned with water. The network uses a web-based resource centre, which includes a database of information on water subjects as well as a list of contacts. The website is updated daily with news and relevant documents. Journalists are able to contribute to a blog and a weekly newsletter is sent to 2000 readers.

The website and blog are used as places to share information, write more personally about water issues and personal and professional water-related experiences, ask questions to colleagues in other countries, or express feelings about being a journalist in Africa.

In the future, the creation of an online news service is planned, reporting on a variety of water issues from privatisation to environmental issues, from sanitation to hydropower. Journalists will be invited to contribute to this service.
