Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SPI-MAP HIV and AIDS and Gender Media Awards

The Sol Plaatje Institute (SPI) and Gender Links (GL) invites media houses (print, radio and television) from the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) region to participate in the SPI-MAP HIV/AIDS and Gender Media Awards. This applies to media houses that form part of the Media Action Plan (MAP) on HIV/AIDS and Gender or who have independently developed their own HIV/AIDS and Gender policies and are in the process of implementing such policies. The awards will be presented at the Highway Africa Conference in Grahamstown, South Africa in September 2007. There are two awards for HIV/AIDS Policies and Gender Policies.

The prizes include:

  • prize money and a floating trophy for the winner and runner up for both the Gender and HIV/AIDS categories.
  • all expenses paid trip to Grahamstown, South Africa to receive the awards and participate in the Highway Africa Conference.
  • the overall winning media house will receive fully paid in house training from a regional training institution and regional trainer on HIV/AIDS and Gender.

Established in 2002 and associated with the Rhodes University School of Journalism and Media Studies, SPI seeks to play a role in the success and quality of African media that meets and contributes to global journalism standards and information flow. It does this by providing courses for present and future media leaders to improve their editorial and business skills.

Launched in 2001, GL, is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) which seeks to promote gender equality in and through the media. GL and the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) lead the policy arm of the Media Action Plan (MAP) on HIV/AIDS and Gender which is coordinated by the Southern Africa Editors Forum (SAEF). Some 218 newsrooms across the country are developing HIV/AIDS and Gender policies as part of MAP. MAP is a collaborative effort coordinated by the SAEF to improve practice and coverage of HIV/AIDS and gender in Southern African newsrooms.

MAP aims include:

  • ensuring that 80% media houses in the SADC region have HIV/AIDS and Gender policies and programmes by the end of 2008;
  • improving coverage of HIV/AIDS and Gender;
  • promoting diversity;
  • ensuring equitable and fair treatment of all within media workplaces;
  • mitigating the effects of HIV/AIDS on the media industry;
  • identifying and recognising progressive newsroom leadership; the development and implementation of HIV/AIDS and gender policies which are making a difference in the work place and in the coverage of these issues by media houses.

Entry rules:
  • media houses can enter for both prizes;
  • entrants must, as far as possible, provide verifiable indicators showing that they are implementing their policies;
  • Gender Links and SPI shall, where appropriate, use their own means to verify claims and;
  • GL and SPI reserve the right to disqualify entrants that misrepresent facts.
Applicants must send a TYPED submission in MS WORD of not more than six pages stating the name of the media house; contact person; phone; e-mail and cell phone; and answering the questions under each one of the criteria for the awards to map@genderlinks.org.za.

The entry must be accompanied by the following documents:
  • copies of the policies;
  • copies of the policies, codes or guidelines with which these policies have been cross referenced;
  • at least three samples of media coverage demonstrating how coverage has been affected as a result of the policies;
  • any visual material, for example photographs, that the media house might wish to include and;
  • any documents that cannot be emailed should be sent to MAP facilitators in each country who will arrange for these to be sent on by courier.
Criteria for the Gender Policy Award:
  • Does the media house have a gender policy?
  • Does this policy cover human resources, editorial and marketing concerns?
  • Has the policy been cross referenced with existing policies and codes?
  • What is the level of by-in and involvement of management in gender policy formulation and implementation? Is there a high level champion?
  • Is there a gender policy sensitisation programme at the workplace?
  • How well known is the policy?
  • Is gender made a concern and responsibility for both men and women?
  • Has the media house committed resources to address the gender inequalities identified in the policy?
  • Does the company have social responsibility programme or partnership with government bodies, community groups or NGOs to promote gender equality?
  • How has the policy impacted on coverage?
  • How has the policy impacted on the work place?
  • How has the policy impacted on marketing?
Criteria for the HIV/AIDS Policy Award:
  • Does the media house have a HIV and AIDS policy?
  • Does this policy cover human resources, editorial and marketing concerns?
  • Has the policy been cross referenced with existing policies and codes?
  • What is the level of by-in and involvement of management in HIV and AIDS policy formulation and implementation? Is there a high level champion?
  • Is there an HIV and AIDS policy sensitisation programme at the workplace? How well known is the policy?
  • Is gender integrated into the HIV and AIDS policy?
  • Has the media house committed resources to address the HIV and AIDS issues identified in the policy?
  • Does the company have social responsibility programme or partnership with government bodies, community groups or NGOs to promote gender equality?

  • How has the policy impacted on marketing?
