Disabled Women's Research Project
Initiated by the South African NGO Zanempilo Trust, this programme seeks to meet the needs for personal, social, and economic empowerment of disabled people, especially women. Specifically, the project runs workshops in South African that focus on helping disabled women. It aims to investigate the barriers hindering women's social and economic development, both personally and collectively; to uncover strategies used by other disabled women to overcome these barriers; and to explore ways of encouraging women to become more involved and to attend training workshops.
Communication Strategies
Eighty women with disabilities from Khayelitsha and Nyanga are members of the project. Through workshops, these members have worked to provide a safe arena for female participants, building self-confidence and a strong collective spirit through the sharing of experiences. The project works closely with the Disabled People South Africa - Women's Section.
