Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
LEARNO.NET is an online learning platform launched in December 2015 by the European Journalism Centre (EJC). Designed especially for journalists and journalism students, LEARNO.NET also serves bloggers, advocacy groups, media entrepreneurs, and writers - in short, anyone with a public-interest mission and journalistic mindset. The video courses are accessible worldwide and are accompanied by an online support community of peers.

EJC is regularly adding new courses to the platform; as of this writing, courses include:
  • Bulletproof Data Journalism: "Make sure you know how to protect your work against all kind of errors that could arise from working with data."
  • Google Search for Journalists: This course teaches learners how to use Google search more efficiently in order to get a more professional research experience.
  • Verification: The Basics: "In the age of the Internet, rumours and hoaxes quickly spread during breaking news situations. As a result, there is an increased need for journalists to sort real, authentic content from the fakes. This course will provide the basics on how to get started with verifying online information."
  • Doing Journalism with Data: First Steps, Skills and Tools: Comprised of video lectures, tutorials, assignments, readings, and discussion forums, this course is open to anyone in the world with an internet connection who wants to tell stories with data.
  • Managing Data Journalism Projects: "Bringing a data journalism project to a good end is not an easy task. There are a lot of variables and processes at play that need to be managed and accounted for before the project can be produced and in the end published."
  • Going Viral Using Social Media Analytics: This course walks learners through metrics and analytics that are useful for writers, exploring ways to optimise a website for social media, to grow a loyal audience, and to figure out whether an organisation is on the right track.
  • Mistakes We Made So You Don't Have To: Data Visualisation, Journalism and the Web: Topics include: how to understand audience, how to built relationships in the newsroom, and how to think of ideas and create them. Includes an overview of approaches and things learned at the Chicago Tribune as they have tried to tell more stories using data and visuals on the web.
