Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Shetizen Journalist

When "she" replaces the "c" of "citizen journalist" it becomes "Shetizen Journalist" - a web-based platform that aims to break down gender stereotypes, promote women's empowerment, and encourage women to speak in their own voice. Designed exclusively for women, the interactive website is a forum for discussions on issues that matter to women. The portal aims to look at mainstream news from a woman's perspective. It also aims to encourage women to come forward and report on issues that affect or influence them.
Communication Strategies

With women submitting news reports about issues that affect them, Shetizen Journalist aims to fix the spotlight on women's rights, gender debates, and news and current affairs from a woman's perspective. The portal provides two options - that of uploading a first-person account called "My Story" and a quick report (QR). My Story is for women who want to talk about their own experiences in the first person. QRs are for women who do not have much time, or who would prefer to quickly express their points of view or for women on the move. As the instructions to submitters indicate: "So, do not think you need to upload wordy write ups - you can just as well keep on uploading short pieces - just so long as you share with our community what you think is important."

Shetizen Journalist is not only intended as a tool for the common woman to report on and share their perspective on issues that impact their lives, but also intended to provide a space for professional women journalists to report on serious issues which impact women's lives, their status and position in society, their health problems, professional needs, etc.

Key Points

Nilanjana Bhowmick, founder and editor, says, "I have worked with several international and Indian media houses and in my experience reports on women's issues are relegated to inside pages and non-prime time news....Also, women journalists are more encouraged to report on celebrity news, gossips, parties, lifestyle and soft features. We want to provide a platform where women journalists from across the world can report on issues that they deem important."
