Radio & Human Rights - Peru
The British Council Peru and the Instituto de Defensa Legal (IDL), a local NGO, are producing a human rights radio programme.
Communication Strategies
Broadcasts are weekly via a network of almost 50 radio stations in the provinces and Peru's largest commercial network, RPP. The BBC World Service has contributed through technical visits to Peru and editorial advice from London to the success of the project in three aspects: Improving production quality ; Journalistic advice on better programme content ; Training for journalists and radio station owners on handling human rights issues and ethics in journalism. This is a four year project which will run until the year 2001.

Key Points
The project has far exceeded its predicted 1.5 million listeners (there are over 2.8 million). With its campaigns the project has had particular success in bringing about specific changes in human rights protection in the following areas:Against press-ganging ('leva') into mandatory military service and amending of the Compulsory Military Service Law; The release of hundreds of innocent people wrongly accused of terrorism; Providing identity documents for thousands of innocent peasants mistakenly wanted by the authorities for terrorism.
