Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Media Network on Drug Abuse and HIV/AIDS (MeNDAH)

The Media Network on Drug Abuse and HIV/AIDS (MeNDAH) is a programme that addresses links between drugs, substance abuse, and HIV/AIDS through journalism. The primary focus of the programme is to draw attention to the link between drug abuse and the spread of HIV/AIDS. Organisers of the Nigeria-based programme include International Press Centre (IPC), Development Communications (DEVCOMS) Network, and Media Concern (MEDIACON) for Women and Children.
Communication Strategies

Organisers say that MeNDAH is directed at raising awareness about the way in which the abuse of substances aid crime and invariably increase the level of new HIV infections. "MeNDAH aims to generate and create programmes for reporting issues surrounding drug abuse as well as its relation to the spread of HIV/AIDS."

MeNDAH, as part of its strategy, networks with other stakeholders in the area of drug demand reduction and the control and management of drug use in the country. It also advocates for policies and programmes for the control of drug abuse, as is being done for HIV/AIDS.
