After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Community Radio Performance Assessment System

This Community Radio Performance Assessment System (CR-PAS) manual from the Radio Knowledge Centre, Community Radio Support Center (CRSC)/ Nepal Forum of Environmental Journalists (NEFEJ) is intended to further the development of community media in Nepal and elsewhere. It is written to provide well-considered community radio benchmarks and criteria. The manual draws on both the grassroots experience of community media and international broadcast practices. It considers the goals that are the basis for the success of community media: public accountability, community representation, locally relevant programming, diverse funding, and due acknowledgement of staff, including volunteers. The set of indicators elaborated in this publication is designed to enable community radio operators to determine the extent to which their efforts are realising these goals. Benchmarks cover the characteristics of a community radio station in terms of content, management, sustainability, participation, and ownership. Underlying the scoring pattern is the inclusive emphasis given to community at all levels.

The framework is indeed a very creditable effort that will be relevant and useful to the sustainable development of community media everywhere, not just radio. As someone who has worked in Nepal in the community radio sector, I warmly applaud it, and hope it forms a component within a developmental program that includes courses and mentoring of media stakeholders and management. From my experience, practical implementation is essential. I make two other points that CRSC should consider in framework implementation and further development: 1. The system should contain more audience related performance indicators, as ultimately any community media needs to find and influence an audience, not simply be a channel and 2. Be more flexible in defining community radio, as it ought to be owned and shaped by the audience/community/needs, not a textbook.

Youth Awareness Environmental Forum (YAEF/Nepal) is community based non-profit membership organization established in 1994 A.D. This YAEF is registered according to law of press and publication act 2049 B.S. This YAEF is an association concern with motivate environmental awareness in the messes and perform social work. It is not a normal NGO but a medium of communication as well as an organizational forum.

YAEF/Nepal is the member of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), South Asia Youth Environment Network (SAYEN), Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA), and Community Media Association (CMA), Asia Pacific water Forum (APWF) and World Water Council (WWC), affiliated with United Nation Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and Global Water Partnership (GWP). The forum is also member of the World Association of Community Radio Broadcaster (AMARC). The forum has established a Women Division which is also member of the World Association of Community Radio Broadcaster (AMARC)'s Women International Networks (WIN) and International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT). The forum has conducted several programs as co-partner of Children and Youth/Sports and Environment Unit (UNEP).

Youth Awareness Environmental Forum / Environmental Information Center Established Community Television namely Environmental Television (ETV/NEPAL). This Television is first community based environmental television in Nepal. The main objective of this television is to broadcast programme on environment, health, education, nature and heritage conservation issues.

Environmental Television ETV/Nepal is member of Community Television Association, Member of Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA), Member of Community Media Association (CMA) UK and Cambridge Community Television CCTV.

Radio and Television are main source of information throughout the world. However, government media of broadcasting have to devote much of their time for broadcasting programme national interest. Therefore, they don't have much time to cover issues related to environment, information, public interest as well as various other important issues. Our objective of study is to establish Television network which will cover all important issues and to reach Katmandu valley via terrestrial as well as cover all over the world via satellite and other objects for the study is how Television Station in Nepal can be established, run in economical and efficient way by utilizing the newly developed broadcasting technology. The subject matter of programme of Environmental Television mainly include environmental issues, news current affairs, political awareness for people, information, nature and heritage conservation entertainment and so on we believe people of all range will be benefited from our programmes.

Environmental Television Nepal will be dedicated for the preservation and cultivation of environment. So that it will help to bring environmental awareness in the community.

As per the meeting held on 17th August, 2010 on the chairmanship of Dr. Astaman Kishee Maharjan, Youth Awareness Environmental Forum–Environmental Information Center has formed the Environmental Television (ETV Nepal) 11 members' management committee with the coordination of Mr. Ashoj Kumar Maharjan. We have already issued Television License from "Ministry of Information and Communication". We launch our broadcast within 6 months.

Now, we are planning to broadcast 8 hours daily. Every Day One Hour, we will broadcast Nature Conservation Video documentaries programmes. Our ETV network has a plan to cover Katmandu Valley and surrounding Via Terrestrial transmission and worldwide by using satellite and IPTV technology. Our target population is 5 millions according to our initial survey. The target population consider a range of age group from children to senior citizens with varying background. Environmental Television's contents are totally new tested for all and value of this content is purely high.
