Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

This free online resource features the work of opinion leaders who provide "quick reactions and accurate analysis to journalists worldwide on complex political, social and religious issues and crises", such as human rights issues and the implications of war and conflict. The purpose of Global Experts is to support the work of journalists, editors, and producers, particularly, but not exclusively, in times of cross-cultural crises. "It encourages a broad diversity of experts and opinion leaders to share their perspectives on issues that go to the core of relations among diverse communities, broadening the choice of available commentary."

Through such features as an "Expert Database", Global Experts provides access to a community that includes academics, analysts and pollsters, former political and diplomatic leaders, faith leaders, civil society activists, entrepreneurs, business leaders, and other journalists and media commentators. Journalists may find experts based on areas of expertise, location (including city), field of work, and language spoken, as well as obtain biographical information and links to articles and interviews. Users may also sign up for media alerts on current events and unfolding crises with suggested names of experts to contact; journalists can contact experts at any time directly and free of charge. "All of the experts on this website are ready to provide quick reactions, give quotes, and share their views with media professionals in response to breaking news events. More than this, they are eager to help enhance understanding about complex and polarizing issues..." The experts were chosen through a selection process that was overseen by a committee of their peers and other journalists. Global Experts continues to expands its network of analysts based in various parts of the world; visitors to the website may submit an application if they wish to be considered as an expert.

Global Experts also offers information on cross-cultural issues, including articles and commentary/op-eds published for free in partnership with newspapers around the world, as well as videos, podcasts, and other multimedia.

Global Experts was developed by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), and is supported by a network of partners from the media, academia, civil society, and the international community, including the European Commission, the International Center for Journalists, Search for Common Ground, International Crisis Group, and the Global Forum for Media Development.
