Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Lessons from Other Transitions: Challenges for Independent Media in Europe and Eurasia

"A roundtable discussion to examine lessons learned by the media development community in Europe and Eurasia, focusing mainly on Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, and Ukraine. The event is being held on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the IREX Media Sustainability Index (MSI) for Europe and Eurasia, which analyzes the strength and viability of the independent media sector in 21 countries. The panelists will explore progress and decline in the media landscape in Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, and Ukraine, among other countries in the region, after major political, social, and economic transformation. What challenges in independent media continue to exist, and what threats are on the horizon? What impact has media assistance had on the sustainability of independent journalism? How can local civil society organizations, donors, implementers, and policymakers apply the experiences and lessons learned from Europe and Eurasia to countries undergoing transitions in other regions"
