Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Investigative Journalism for Anti-Corruption and Good Governance: A Toolkit for Facilitators

SummaryText
This 29-page toolkit, published by Pact Tanzania, is designed to improve journalists' capacity for investigative journalism (IJ). The toolkit was developed during an IJ training conducted by Pact Tanzania and the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Tanzania. The authors hope that this toolkit will help in improving the skills of journalists and further motivate them, the media houses, and training institutions to carry out even more public and investigative journalism.

The manual aims to empower journalists to take a "front seat position" in enforcing accountability and good governance through investigative journalism. It is also designed to meet the requirements of all stakeholders in search of accountability and transparency at national and local levels. Each chapter covers a different area of investigative journalism.
  • Chapter 1 defines IJ, how it works, and its advantages. It also looks at how to identify stakeholders, ethical conduct of an investigative journalist, and the concept and methodology of Public Expenditure Tracking Systems (PETS).
  • Chapter 2 deals with corruption, its definition, major types of corruption, causes and effects, and how to respond to corruption.
  • Chapter 3 is about IJ in good governance (GG). It defines governance: the state and its three pillars, separation of powers, definition of politics and entry points for IJ.
  • Chapter 4 covers the role of IJ in anti-corruption and GG, and how to identify entry points and possible stakeholders.
In each of the 4 chapters, there are a number of training modules relating to the topic. Objectives for the session, a list of training methodologies, and facilitator notes are also included. The modules are designed as frameworks so that the sessions are participatory and interactive and require a facilitator who is able to draw out the experiences, opinions, and knowledge of the participants.
