Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

John Manyarara Investigative Journalism Award 2007

The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) is inviting entries for the MISA John Manyarara Investigative Journalism Awards 2007. The awards are in honour of Judge John Olivier Manyarara, the founding chairperson of the MISA Trust Fund Board (TFB) who retired from the TFB in September 2000.

The awards seek to recognise excellence in investigative journalism in any form of the media in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

There are two awards;

  1. The John Manyarara Investigative Journalist of the Year who will receive a cash prize of EU €4000.
  2. The John Manyarara Upcoming Investigative Journalist of the Year who will receive a cash prize of EU €2000 and a scholarship to the value of EU €6000 to further develop the recipient's investigative journalism skills.
Application Info
The awards are given for an article or series of articles that demonstrate investigative skills and presentation of facts.

The judges will be looking for work which:
  • demonstrates investigative journalistic skill and methodologies like source building and data searching, as well as depth and insight;
  • is newsworthy, with the news value clearly derived from investigative methodologies above;
  • concerns an issue of interest to the public in all its diversity;
  • interrogates society from all angles;
  • required perseverance or bravery to realise;
  • is the product of the reporter's own initiative and effort;
  • uncovers facts that someone or some agency may have tried to keep from public scrutiny;
  • tells the story in a clear and balanced manner; and
  • was broadcast or published between January 1 and December 31 2006.
