Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
Novartis developed this package of materials to stimulate discussion with children about malaria. Intended for children aged from 5 to 12 years old, this toolkit uses simple messages, games, story books, and a cartoon video to make learning about malaria interesting and fun. Novartis hopes that this kit will encourage parents to talk about malaria with their children, and to possibly extend the dialogue through primary schools, educational organisations, and other children's groups.

The guide includes the following materials, which can be downloaded from the organsiation's website:
  • Toolkit guide - This guide provides parents with detailed instructions on how to use the various elements of the children's toolkit.
  • Leo & Kya storybook - This colorful storybook is designed to teach children about malaria – who is at risk, some of the key symptoms, and how it can be treated and prevented.
  • Coloring book - This book features malaria-themed pictures for children to colour in.
  • Activity book - The activity book provides children with a range of fun activities involving Leo, Kya, and their friends.
  • Card games - This pack of thirty cards contains 15 pairs of images. They can be used to play games such as ‘Snap’ or ‘Matching Pairs’.
  • Bookmark - The bookmark can be used to mark a child’s place in the storybook, activity book, or any other book.
  • Ruler - The ruler depicts a colorful African scene with Leo, Kya, and friends.
