Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

This is a simple, action-oriented self-assessment tool for community radio (CR) stations to assess their structure and performance on a variety of parameters. New Delhi, India's Ideosync Media Combine poses a variety of questions to spark discussion. For example, "How is the management committee formulated and who are the current members of the Management Committee?" Some possible responses are included to inspire thinking (not as options to select from), such as: "Well known local community members from the community are nominated by the license holding NGO [non-governmental organisation] and there is equal representation of women and marginalised communities....We hold an open call every two years and community representatives get elected to the CR management committee but there is unequal representation of women and marginalised communities....Local politicians and village heads and heads of other local NGOS in the area and the district collector are on the management committee. There was no clear process how they became part of the committee." Whatever response(s) the CR gives, participants are prompted to discuss questions such as: Is this in keeping with the Mission and Vision of the station? How can this be changed/improved? They are asked to write down the actions decided upon and the timeline.

Ideosync explains: "Please adapt it to suit the needs of your stations. The response options will give you a sense of the kinds of responses you could have to the areas of enquiry into your work. Use this tool to analyse and improve on your activities by ideating on opportunities for change and desirable actions and activities that you will undertake in a stipulated timeframe to improve on any or all of the areas below. You may like to print out the questions and responses for reference. Once this has been discussed by the team members, you can enter final responses in this booklet and save it for the record so that you may revisit the actions committed to during this self analysis and review of your work when undertaking the next review."
