Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Bush Radio HIV/HOP Project - South Africa

An initiative focused on outreach to youth on issues of prevention of HIV/AIDS.
Communication Strategies

The HIV / HOP project at Bush Radio kicked off with a Concert on March 18, 2000. The Youth Against AIDS (YAA) 2000 Concert involved both Bush Radio's SACRAI (South African Community Radio Aids Initiative) and the YAA 2000 programmes that involves organisations from around the country dealing with HIV / AIDS. Phase 1 saw a group of 40 high school students from various schools in the Cape come for training at the Bush Radio training Centre in preparation for the concert. A month of on air talk shows, hosted by the students, was part of this. Phase 2 saw a programme developer and 4 young people from the Hip Hop community spend 3 months at Bush Radio, designing programmes that will carry an HIV / AIDS message to the youth in the townships. The programme has an on air component that runs on Tuesday afternoons and Friday evenings for 3 hours each.

Development Issues

Youth, HIV/AIDS.

Key Points

Already some very interesting lessons were learned on how the youth in South African communities view issues regarding HIV/AIDS. A CD will accompany the final report that will be available at the end of July 2000. The team that worked on the programme will be attending a seminar in Amsterdam on September 23 to outline the the project and be part of an evaluation process.

Partners

Phase 1 was sponsored by Radio Netherlands. Phase 2 was sponsored by NiZA (Nederlandse instituut Voor Zuid Afrika).
