Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Global Maternal Health Writing Contest

The Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting is partnering with the writers' site Helium to sponsor a global writing contest about maternal health. The centre has launched a new interactive site focused on maternal mortality issues called Dying for Life. This multimedia exhibit includes photo essays, videos, and dispatches from Guinea Bissau, India, Mexico, Ethiopia, and Nigeria. The aim is to foster in-depth engagement with this global issue.

Winning essays will be showcased on the Pulitzer Center’s website and on Helium. Winning writers will also receive a Pulitzer Center Global Issues/Citizen Voices Award.

Application Info

In selecting a winner, the Pulitzer Center especially values "vivid, well-articulated essays that reflect unusual insight, a clear point of view and, where appropriate, original reporting. Anything fictionalized or not based on the writer’s own observations should be clearly marked as such in the body of the text."

What all mothers hope for, dream of even before the birth of
their child, a healthy child, and then on their arrival to
keep them safe, healthy, and loved.
