Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Community Radio Fund of Canada (CRFC) Grants

The Community Radio Fund of Canada (CRFC) invites Canadian community-oriented broadcasters and associations to apply for funding through two programmes: the Radio Talent Development Program and the Youth Internship Program. The goal of both programmes is to develop innovative local interest programming while providing mentorship, education, and/or training for broadcasters. Proposals are assessed in March and April by an independent jury, with final results announced each May. There is CAD$80,000 available under each programme, with a maximum CAD$10,000 for each applicant.

The mandate of the CRFC is to provide support to the more than 140 licensed campus and community radio stations in Canada and to foster a well-resourced, dynamic, and accessible sector. It distributes funds under four priority areas:
1. Local Community News and Access
2. Community Music and Expression
3. Emerging Distribution Technologies
4. Sustainability and Capacity-Building

Both of these programmes are made possible by a financial partnership with Astral Media Radio through a Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) contribution mechanism.
