Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

UNICEF’s Avian Influenza Workshops Educate Thai Local Media

Summary

This article describes the importance of bird flu training workshops in educating Thai local media on avian flu issues. The workshops, organised by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), were aimed at educating reporters on how to report on avian influenza in an accurate and informative way.

According to the article, the workshops helped journalists and media personnel to understand the ever-present danger that avian flu outbreaks could have on Thai villages and communities. As part of the training, journalists interviewed poultry workers and learnt ways in which villagers could protect themselves from the disease.

One participant, a community radio disk jockey (DJ), spoke of the importance of having knowledgeable DJs to communicate relevant information to their listeners. “If we get the right messages and know how to communicate them, we can change people’s behaviour and protect the community from bird flu,” she said.
