Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

UNESCO Media Project - Mozambique

This UNESCO project called “Media Development in Mozambique” produces radio broadcasting programmes on health, culture and the environment, in response to the community's need for information and the re-establishment of social networks after years of war.
Communication Strategies
This programme works on the basis of three main concepts: decentralisation of the media; media pluralism; and the training of media people. The main activities consist of establishing community media centers in rural areas, establishing stronger structures for larger media, initiating legislation within the field of community radio, purchasing equipment for Radio Mozambique and evaluating the media and journalists at the state university in Maputo. The community radio functions to assist in the development of a democratic Mozambique through improving the direct distribution of information and ensuring the people's participation in the development process.
Development Issues
Economic development, political development, media development, rights, democratization, health, environment, culture
Key Points
Some journalists experience opposition from the government toward inclusion of a “freedom of speech” clause in the constitution. The media are weak with inadequately educated journalists, outdated equipment, scarce resources, a lack of materials and problems associated with distribution and transmission. The goal of the project is to support independent media development and media pluralism for the development of democratization in the country.
