Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Uganda National Journalism Awards 2015

The African Centre for Media Excellence invites entries for the Uganda National Journalism Awards 2015. These awards intend to "recognise and promote excellent reporting which informs and empowers the public, increases the voices and spaces for critical information, and holds the powerful to account." Organised with support from Hivos, the Uganda National Journalism Awards will provide a cash prize and commemorative plaque to the winners and runners up in each of the 20 categories. The awards will be presented at a grand gala ceremony to be held in April 2015.

The awards are intended to:

  • Acknowledge, inspire, support and incetivise professional and competent journalists to produce compelling in-depth reports;
  • Motivate aspiring and young journalists to attain an uphold standards of excellence in their profession;
  • Increase the quantity and quality of public affairs reporting and investigative journalism;
  • Recognise and encourage creativity and entreprise in reporting practice and in the development and use of new journalism tools; and
  • Increase the diversity of voices in media coverage and spaces within which journalists operate.

Journalists can submit entries for print (including photographs and cartoons), radio, television or online in the following categories:

  • Agriculture reporting
  • Arts and culture journalism
  • Business, economic, and financial reporting
  • Commentary and opinion
  • Data journalism
  • Editorial cartooning
  • Energy, oil, gas, and mineral resources
  • Environment reporting
  • Explanatory reporting
  • Feature writing

Application Info

The Uganda National Journalism Awards (UNJA) are open to all journalists, full-time and freelance, working in Uganda. Journalists may only submit one article, broadcast, or series in each category, entry of two submissions in a category is only permitted if one of the submissions contains a shared byline or production credit. Submissions can be made to a maximum of three categories only.

Eligibility:

  • work submitted must be published or broadcast in a Ugandan media outlet or a regional news outlet with wide distribution in Uganda.
  • all work submitted must have been broadcast or published between January 1 and December 31 2014.
  • any news article, broadcast programme, or series, covering a single topic or subject in the categories listed for competition, is eligible.
  • local language articles and broadcasts may be entered, but must be accompanied with English translations or transcripts (for broadcast).
