Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

This project of UNESCO began March 1, 1999 in the countries of Algeria, Belgium, Egypt, France, Jordan, Italy, Morocco, and Tunisia in an effort to empower women journalists in the Mediterranean and to strengthen women newspapers and journals in order to ensure that women maintain a ‘voice' in national communication processes.
Communication Strategies

Activities include seminars on media and advocacy, communication, women and the media in the Mediterranean; two national workshops on advanced journalism techniques; two national workshops on advanced desk-top and electronic publishing; a sub-regional workshop on the management of newspaper/magazine publishing; and the provision of three desk-top-publishing equipment units.
Development Issues

Women, journalism, gender issues, democratic values, human rights
Key Points

This is Phase Two of a two-phase project that began in1997. The long term objectives of this project are to empower at the grassroots level by increasing participation of women journalists, and to support women journalists and magazines. This will be accomplished by strengthening their understanding of communication theories, equipping practicing women journalists with advanced communication and journalistic skills and assisting women publications wherever possible.
