Taco Kuiper Award
Wits University’s Investigative Journalism Workshop, in conjunction with the Valley Trust, is calling for entries for the Taco Kuiper Award. The award offers a first prize of ZAR 200,000 and a second prize of ZAR 100,000 to the most outstanding investigative journalism in South African print and broadcast media during the previous year. Last year’s winners were three reporters from the Daily Dispatch for their discovery of hundreds of neo-natal deaths at Frere Hospital. Second prize went to a Mail & Guardian team who exposed Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi’s alleged associations with the underworld.
The award can be made to any journalist or team of journalists. Should a team be made up of more than three people, the award is given in the name of the staff of the publishing institution. It can be made for a single story, a series of stories or a body of work, providing these were all published within the calendar year, deal with issues and events affecting South Africa, and do not number more than six items. All entries for the award have to be submitted either by an editor or through the Taco Kuiper nominating committee. The deadline for submissions is February 27 2009.
