Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Trainer's Guide
SummaryText
This trainer's guide, "Sex, Sexuality and HIV Prevention for Women, Men, and Couples" was developed by the Southern Africa HIV and AIDS Information Dissemination Service (SAfAIDS) and Seke Rural Home Based Care (SRHBC) of Zimbabwe. It is part of a programme to mainstream HIV and AIDS into cultural practices in order to reduce the vulnerability of women and girls in southern Africa to HIV infection. The guide is designed to assist trainers to not only help participants better understand themselves and their sexual partners and appreciate the vital role that condoms play in maintaining sexual health, but also to address issues of resistance to HIV prevention among couples. It begins with separate sessions for female and male participants and ends with a couples' session.

According to the publication, the training has been designed around principles of experiential learning. In other words, it has been developed to allow participants to "learn by doing", to gain knowledge, and to practice new skills by taking part in as many activities as possible. It contains a variety of methodologies designed to enhance participants' learning, including: guided discussions on key topics; small group work ("buzz groups"); individual exercises; brainstorming activities; role plays; and demonstrations.
