Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

RTK INITIATIVE STATUS
Phase I: Planning for RTK -- Completed
Phase II: Participatory Action Research -- Initiated; to be completed upon receipt of funding
Phase III: Research development and Implementation of Communication Strategy -- To be initiated 2003

PURPOSE:
The primary goal of Right to Know is to plan and implement adolescent communication strategies that provide adolescents (both in school and out of school) with information and lifeskills for the prevention of HIV/AIDS, and to ensure adolescent participation in all aspects of planning and implementation.

PRIORITY ACTIVITIES, 2002-2003:
(under revision due to conflict)
  • Research findings state that peer education must complement any informational or mass media campaigns and that the RTK priority is to pursue the development of peer educator manuals that reflect the needs of young people.
  • RTK will be integrated into both UNICEF and national HIV/AIDS programming.

PARTNERS and LINKAGES
  • Youth Coordination will be facilitated by 4 associations: LA, Scout, PECI, RSB (Marcel et Evariste) that will lead to the creation of RESEAU D 'ACTION CONCERTEES (youth network against HIV AIDS)
  • Steering Committee: government agencies (MEN, MSP, MLS) UNAIDS, UNFPA, COOP, FRANCAISE

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS TO DATE
  • RTK West Africa Regional Training 13-17 May 2002
  • Coordination with 4 national NGOs to collect and analyze PAR June–August
  • Re-orientation of the project objectives, given the conflict (Current).
