Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Helping the News Media Cover Family Planning

SummaryText
Family planning programmes often make the news because they affect large numbers of people, reflect changing social attitudes and practices, involve government leaders, and deal with controversial issues. Many journalists, however, know little about family planning, and other topics compete for their time and attention. Most family planning programmes, for their part, have made little effort to encourage informative, accurate news coverage. To make informed choices about family planning, women and men need accurate information in the media as well as in the clinic. This publication is intended to help the news media cover family planning fully and accurately.

Available in English, French, and Spanish, this publication (Population Report J-42) includes the following chapters:
  • The News Media and Family Planning Programs
  • Building a News Media Relations Program
  • Developing a Strategy
  • How to Tell the Family Planning Story
  • Tools for Analysis
  • Matching Your Message to the Medium
  • Developing Materials that Interest Journalists
  • Making News
  • Dealing with Controversy
