Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
This toolkit aims to provide useful insights and tips on how best to use the media. It is meant to be especially useful for organisations working through issues relating to the mass media, and for those who provide interviews to the media. The toolkit also offers an overview and examples on how to write a press release. In addition, the toolkit describes how newsrooms work in the mass media. It looks at issues of power and control, and moves on to offer practical guidelines when doing interviews with newspapers, radio, or television journalists. It also looks at issuing press statements.

Topics include:
  • What is the media?
  • Ownership and control of the media
  • Why relate to the media?
  • How the media works
  • An interview? Yes or no?
  • How to handle interviews
  • Newspaper, radio and television interviews
  • Handling a crisis
  • Writing a press statement
  • Working with journalists

CIVICUS aims to help civil society organisations build their capacity and achieve their goals. Based on requests from members, CIVICUS has produced several toolkits to enable organisations to improve their capacity in a number of areas - from communications and planning skills to writing funding proposals.

This toolkit is available free of charge, either on CD-ROM or as a download from the CIVICUS website; it is available in MS Word (.doc) and PDF formats.

This is great information! I have been looking for exactly this for the past four years as I am involved in coordinating media skills training for CBOs and NGOs.

I am going to download the info now and will then decide on how to distribute it to the 13 organisations that are part of our media & democracy project Sunrise Initiative.

Thanks,
Aniela
