Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

Bangladesh Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) has published an updated version of a Handbook on Community Radio: Voices for the Voiceless of Rural People with the support from Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). Its purpose, according to BNNRC, is "to meet the basic needs and demands of the community radio initiators, regulators, managers, community leaders and community broadcasters in respect to setting up and operating the community radio stations successfully in Bangladesh."

According to this resource, community radio addresses critical social issues at the community level, such as poverty and social exclusion, empowers marginalised rural groups, and catalyses democratic processes in decisionmaking and ongoing development efforts. The publication serves as a resource for the Community Radio Academy that has been established by BNNRC with the view to building up capacity on community radio operation of the initiators. Under the initiatives of the academy, training workshops, round tables, seminars, etc. are being organised.

This handbook is compilation of chapters and key aspects of community radio operation mechanisms. With the help of this handbook, community radio stakeholders will have access to knowledge of technical and management skills on the function, management, procedure, prospect, sustainability, working environment, culture, socio-economic status, challenges, and difficulties of running community radio.
