Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Gender for Journalists

SummaryText
This online toolkit is designed to raise awareness in news rooms worldwide of gender inequality and the role that media can play to promote a balanced and non-stereotyped portrayal of women. It is premised on the idea that, if fully briefed about gender issues and gender sensitive reporting, journalists should be able to present a clearer and more accurate picture of the contribution that both women and men make to the development and prosperity of their societies.

The online toolkit is based on gender sensitisation workshops and seminars developed and conducted by the author in Africa, the Caribbean, South and South East Asia and the Middle East. It is designed to make the reader aware of the areas where women are disadvantaged and the role that men can play in bringing about change. It also provides guidance on information sources and websites.
