Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

"Media and technology have revolutionized our daily lives, giving more people greater access to information and knowledge. Technology and social media connect nations and citizens around the world, providing them with a platform to voice opinions, share ideas, and challenge injustice."

New America NYC and BBC Media Action are hosting a conversation about the impact of media's changing nature on Afghanistan and Pakistan. The core question orienting the discussion is: How is the media revolution impacting fragile states and to what extent is it transforming their social and political landscapes?

Presenters include:

  • Huma Yusuf, co-author, BBC Media Action's "The Media of Pakistan: Fostering Inclusion in a Fragile Democracy?" [editor's note: click here for a summary of this document] and Pakistan Scholar, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars
  • Tom Freston, consultant, Moby Media Group in Afghanistan, and co-President & co-COO, Viacom (2004-2006)
  • Omar Samad, Senior Central Asia Fellow, National Security Studies Program, New America, and former ambassador of Afghanistan to France and Canada
