Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The Department of Mass Communication, Makerere University, in collaboration with African Network for Strategic Communication in Health and Development (AfriComNet) has announced a 10-day intensive course - "Developing Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) Materials for Print, Radio, TV/Video, and New Media." This course is a continuation of the Basics in Strategic Health Communication Course offered by AfriComNet, and is designed to provide training in the creative design process for SBCC materials from the strategy/creative brief to final materials. The course addresses both theoretical and practical aspects of materials development. The content of the course will include: introduction to the design process; planning a multi-media SBCC campaign; and introduction to the design of print materials, social media, TV/video and radio programmes for health communication, including pretesting of SBCC materials.
Course objectives are to:

  • familiarise participants with the creative process for developing SBCC materials from the creative brief/strategy to final materials;
  • build the skills of participants to design effective SBCC materials for print, radio, TV and new media in various formats;
  • teach participants how to integrate new media/social media messages into existing SBCC programming; and
  • empower participants to manage the production processes and relationships with ad agencies in designing effective SBCC materials.

Registration information:

Deadline Date for application: March 31, 2013. The course is designed for health communication professionals and programme staff with prior training in strategic communication, who are involved in health and development communication materials development at local, national, and/or international levels.
To apply, applicants need to send a letter of application (maximum one page) explaining how this training will benefit them and outline their expectations from the training. This letter must inclu together with de a CV and evidence of prior completion of a course in strategic health or development communication course.
