Community-Based Counselling for People Affected by HIV and AIDS

This book is an HIV/AIDS counselling tool designed for sub-Saharan Africans affected by HIV/AIDS. Published by Catholic AIDS Action, an HIV/AIDS prevention and assistance faith-based organisation in Namibia, and Maskew Miller Longman in South Africa, the book is intended to assist counsellors in their communication strategies with people affected by the epidemic. The book was written by Mark G. Winiarski when he lived in Namibia as a Fulbright scholar; Winiarski now works at the Jacobi Hospital in Bronx, New York in the United States.

”The author adapted basic interpersonal and general mental health precepts, emphasizing the counsellor's role in building a relationship with the client through skillful listening and a non-judgmental presence. The book teaches that HIV and AIDS should be regarded as having biomedical, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects. A wide range of specific issues - including emotional problems, the use of alcohol and other substances, and helping a client take medication as prescribed - are included in the contents.”
