Media development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships (AFPF) and Daniel Pearl Fellowships (DPF)

The Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships (AFPF) and Daniel Pearl Fellowships (DPF) are inviting applicants to apply for opportunities to report for United States (US)-based newspapers from. Since 1984, AFPF has provided on-the-job training to developing countries. In the US, Fellows learn practices, standards, and values of US journalism, which they can adapt, share, and apply in their home countries.

The programme goals are the following:

  • To provide the Fellow with experience in reporting, writing, and editing that will enhance future professional performance;
  • To enable the Fellow to gain a practical understanding of the function and significance of the free press in American society;
  • To transfer knowledge gained on the programme to colleagues at home; and
  • To foster continuing ties between free press institutions and journalists in the US and their counterparts in other countries.
Application Info

Applicants for the fellowships must meet the following minimum criteria of eligibility:

  • Current full-time employment as a journalist for the news or editorial departments of independent newspapers, wire services, online publications, or magazines of general public interest in a developing country or emerging market;
  • At least three years of full-time professional experience as a journalist in the print/online media;
  • Citizenship of a developing country or an emerging market;
  • Early- to mid-career status and between 25 and 35 years old;
  • A demonstrated personal commitment to a career in journalism in a developing country or an emerging market;
  • Ability and desire to share what was learned during the fellowship with colleagues at home;
  • Endorsement from the management of the home publication; and
  • An excellent command of both written and spoken English, as all activities are conducted in English.
